Merz Celebrates 126 Years of Innovation in Medical Compression Hosiery
At The Loop – Chapter One: Medical Textiles event, Merz showcased its expertise in medical compression stockings, marking 126 years of manufacturing.

German circular knitting machinery manufacturer Merz recently highlighted its long-standing innovation in medical compression hosiery at The Loop – Chapter One: Medical Textiles event in Albstadt.
Founded in 1900 by Carl Merz in Hechingen, the company initially produced sewing machines and bicycles before developing its first circular knitting machine for socks in 1948. By 1970, Merz specialized in machines for medical stockings, a focus that continues today.
Currently, Merz operates from a facility of approximately 6,400 square meters, employing around 70 people. Its machinery is used in over 30 countries, with models designed for producing various types of medical compression hosiery.
Graduated compression stockings, which apply controlled pressure to the lower limbs, are essential for managing venous conditions. Merz's machinery supports the production of various compression garment formats, including full-length tights and knee-high stockings.
In addition to medical compression stockings, Merz's machines can produce anti-embolism stockings and sports compression socks, showcasing the versatility of their technology. The company emphasizes in-house manufacturing and sustainability, with over 50% of its electricity sourced from photovoltaic systems.
