Hyosung Launches Bio-BDO Production in Vietnam
Hyosung TNC has begun commercial production of bio-based 1,4-butanediol (bio-BDO) in Vietnam, enhancing its sustainable materials strategy.

Hyosung TNC has commenced commercial production of bio-based 1,4-butanediol (bio-BDO) in Vietnam, marking a significant milestone in its strategy to develop an integrated manufacturing network for bio-based elastane and other sustainable materials.

The new bio-BDO facility has an initial annual production capacity of 50,000 tonnes, with plans to expand to 200,000 tonnes. This project is part of a planned US$1 billion investment by Hyosung.

Hyosung’s bio-BDO is produced through the fermentation of sugarcane-derived sugars, replacing traditional fossil-based feedstocks. The bio-BDO is chemically identical to its fossil-derived counterpart and is used to manufacture regen BIO spandex, which is suitable for applications such as sportswear and swimwear.
The company aims to improve supply chain reliability and production efficiency by integrating manufacturing stages within Vietnam. Hyosung's bio-based materials are certified for sustainability, supporting brands seeking transparency in material sourcing.

Hyosung is promoting its developments in bio-based elastane at various international textile industry events, further establishing its position in the renewable textiles market.
