The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) is strengthening its focus on bringing textile innovations to commercial scale, marking its 20th anniversary with new initiatives for industry collaboration.

During the recent Innovation and Technology Symposium 2026 in Hong Kong, CEO Jake Koh emphasized the importance of translating research into commercially viable technologies. He stated, "The true test of innovation begins when technology moves beyond the laboratory and into industry."

A key aspect of this strategy is the development of HKRITA’s Green Machine technology, which separates polyester and cotton from blended textile waste for recycling. Koh noted the need to refine the technology’s business model to facilitate its industrial deployment.

This year, HKRITA also opened an office in Shanghai to enhance connections with textile manufacturers and research institutions in mainland China, particularly in the Yangtze River Delta. Chairman Teresa Yang highlighted that this expansion aims to support cross-regional research and accelerate project development.

The symposium included discussions on the application of artificial intelligence in textile manufacturing and the skills needed for industrial transformation. Additionally, HKRITA awarded the Open Lab Global Challenge 2026, recognizing student innovations focused on environmental and social challenges.
