The global textile and apparel industry is encountering substantial challenges in adopting artificial intelligence (AI), as outlined in a recent white paper by the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) and the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University.

Published on October 15, 2026, the report, titled AI in the Textile Value Chain: A Strategic Guide to Artificial Intelligence for the Global Textile Industry, emphasizes that successful AI adoption relies more on coordinated investments in data infrastructure and workforce capabilities than on the technology itself.

Despite advancements in digitalization, many textile manufacturers still operate with disconnected systems that hinder data accessibility. The report characterizes the industry as digitally fragmented, which complicates the effective use of AI.

AI has shown potential benefits in areas such as fabric inspection, predictive maintenance, and demand forecasting. However, the report cautions that poor-quality data can exacerbate existing issues, making data preparation essential for successful AI implementation.

The authors recommend prioritizing workforce development and establishing effective data management practices, while also advocating for stronger collaboration among industry players to support smaller enterprises in developing AI capabilities.
